Orticola di Roma: the definitive program and all the info on the Roman exhibition-market.

Orticola di Rome envelops the center of the capital with flowers of a thousand colors: Villa Borghese and via Condotti will be the protagonists of the event dedicated to horticulture, nature, art and sustainable mobility. A “green” event for the first time in the historic heart of the city to offer Romans and tourists the opportunity to immerse themselves in the varied world of flowers and plants.

Much more than a market exhibition, Orticola di Roma is a cultural initiative that sees the involvement of nurserymen, plant producers and companies attentive to sustainability alongside the museums of the Villa Borghese circuit, the Fai and the Institutions in a single three days, declined between beauty, harmony and nature. Via dei Condotti dresses up in spring thanks to the art of the flower designers who will decorate one of the most beautiful streets in Rome, against the backdrop of Trinità dei Monti, with original and colorful flower boxes. Two floral columns placed at the entrance to the street will build a natural continuation of the flowering that adorns the Spanish Steps with traditional azalea plants. The luxury shopping of those who stay in the city for the weekend, during the three days of the event, will breathe the fragrant blossoming of spring

Viale delle Magnolie will be animated by specialized quality exhibitors: from selected bulbs, to extraordinary tillandsias in bloom, from fascinating and succulent cacti to exotic carnivorous plants, from Japanese art of Kokedama to elegant multicolored orchids. The flower designers will also be present with their fresh flowers and original compositions perfect for any type of gift but also for decorating homes and gardens. Do not forget the artisans and hobbyists with their creations inspired by the world of flowers and plants, such as fabrics decorated with the technique of botanical print in contact or scarves in fiber bamboo, and then bijoux, lamps and much more, all in the name of uniqueness and originality. In the program of the exhibition, a space will be dedicated to botanical publishing with the presence of Nicoletta Campanella of Nicla Edizioni with special attention to the enhancement of the Italian botanical heritage with the presence of the Secret Garden Garden Tour. Finally, the non-profit organization of the Italian Forestry Fund for the protection of woods will be present at the first edition of Orticola in Rome to inform visitors about the importance of woods in the balance of the ecosystem.

Not only flowers and plants, but also cultural visits: the Fai (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano) will offer the extraordinary opportunity of a special visit in the subsoil of Rome: under Villa Medici, a few steps from the Orticola exhibition market, flows the Vergine aqueduct which supplies water to the Barcaccia and the Trevi Fountain. On 7 and 8 May, the FAI will be available to accompany Orticola’s guests on their descent to the aqueduct through the famous 15th-century spiral staircase. Do not miss the floral itineraries at the Borghese Gallery, at the National Gallery of Modern Art and at the Museum of Villa Medici, where you can ideally admire the works exhibited with a “botanical eye”, with special guided tours or simply following the itinerary set out in stung by the magazine “Gardenia”.

PLACES

Orticola di Roma 2022 will involve three central locations in the capital:

· Via dei Condotti: the event will come to life in the famous shopping street with floral installations that will decorate Via dei Condotti. The inauguration, organized in collaboration with the Via Condotti Association, will take place on May 5 in a completely pedestrianized street for the occasion.

· Villa Borghese: the magical scenery of Villa Borghese and specifically Viale delle Magnolie will come alive with specialized quality exhibitors: from selected bulbs, to fascinating and succulent cacti with exotic carnivorous plants, from the Japanese art of Kokedama to elegant multicolored orchids.

· Hotel De Russie: the Roman jewel of the Rocco Forte Hotels group, the Hotel de Russie, is located along the elegant Via del Babuino, between two of the most famous squares in Rome, Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo. During the first Roman edition of Orticola, in the monumental garden resulting from the inspiration of Valadier, from 6 to 8 May, from 10:00 to 19:00, the Hotel de Russie will host a Vip Green Lounge dedicated to sponsors and celebrities and can be visited by invitation.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Thanks to the collaboration of various partners, Orticola di Roma 2022 is also culture, in fact various cultural activities have been organized:

· Fondo Ambiente Italiano – FAI: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 May 2022 there will be an extraordinary opening of the aqueduct “The snail of Villa Medici” of the Virgin Aqueduct, by the volunteers of the FAI Delegation of Rome. A place that, due to its constructive characteristics and the history it silently guards, represents something truly unique and fascinating. Inside a cylindrical well, with true mastery, a large spiral staircase was built in the 16th century which, with its 117 steps, reaches the speco of the ancient Vergine aqueduct: designed by Marco Vipsanio Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus, was inaugurated on 9 June 19 BC, a service of the Agrippa thermal baths in Campo Marzio. Visits can be booked at the FAI point inside Orticola.
In addition to this extraordinary opening to and dedicated to Orticola di Roma, the FAI has developed a program full of initiatives and unmissable events “Rome. The green and the city “and available on their website: https://fondoambiente.it/.

· Fondo Forestale Italiano: a non-profit association that preserves biodiversity and stems land consumption by conserving and creating woods on land which it acquires ownership. All the woods are left in their natural state, without cuts for economic or utility purposes. Through its action, the FFI mitigates the negative consequences of climate change at the local level. Thanks to Orticola, the “mission” of the non-profit organization will be disseminated to educate citizens to a more conscious life while respecting the environment and trees. On Sunday 8 May at 3 pm, in the area designated for interventions, the President of the FF, Emanuele Lombardi, will brief visitors on the importance of forests in the balance of the ecosystem.

· Nicla Edizioni: Orticola di Roma could not miss a space dedicated to “botanical reading”, an editorial genre that is increasingly followed by gardening enthusiasts and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for creating state-of-the-art gardens and terraces. A reference point in the dissemination of the art of gardening at the highest levels in Rome is the journalist and writer Nicoletta Campanella, testimonial of a new publishing genre created by herself with Nicla Edizioni (www.nicla-arte.org), a publishing house born around the community of the Italian Horticultural System. The botanical readings by Nicoletta Campanella will take place on Friday 6 May at 5.00 pm and Sunday 8 May at 11.00 am. On Saturday 7 May at 3.30 pm the President of the Roman Garden, Maria Gloria Viero, together with the architect Nathalie Grenon Sartogo, will illustrate the project for the refurbishment of the Tiburtina station ring road in a green area such as the high way of Manhattan in NY.

The Secret Garden Tours: With the Secret Garden Garden Tours, in Orticola di Rome horticultural tourism takes shape and the flower show becomes a destination to discover the beauties of the Capital: in this regard, a tourist package has been created including a Roman itinerary with a visit to the Villa Borghese event. An operation that intends to contribute to the tourism industry of the capital with a travel proposal of high level and cultural value. The appointments of the “Roman Walks in the Green” cost € 20 (excluding children under 12) and will start from Villa Borghese – stand of the Secret Garden of Orticola in Rome – at 3.30 pm on Friday 6 May and at 10.30 am on Saturday 7 May. Reservations required letizia@promotuscia.it; 3485203954.

From Tuscia, to Italy, to Europe, to then go to other continents: taking care of gardens is taking care of life, listening to a world that asks to slow down, to see the plants grow and the fruits ripen, respecting the rhythm of seasons and grasping the fragility and strength of what is ephemeral and the most fascinating: the beauty of nature!

Orticola 2022: everything you need to know about the 25th edition of the Milanese market exhibition

Orticola returns in its historical guise on the second weekend of May, bringing with it a fundamental message for human well-being and health.
Plants, flowers and gardens are a primary good for man as well as constant contact with nature.

Walking in a park or in a wood, cultivating a vegetable garden, working in the garden and staying connected with plants are all actions that help develop and maintain constant psycho-physical well-being.
Orticola’s goal is to reach anyone, showing once again that the benefits of plants and nature are innumerable and available to everyone.
In a world that increasingly leads us to move away from greenery, increasing our pace, the level of stress, for example, staying in contact with plants can help us live better.

25 years of Orticola in short

The first edition of Orticola dates back to 1866 and was held in the hall of Palazzo Dugnani, one year after its foundation.
The first edition in Palestro in what have become today the gardens named after Indro Montanelli is dated 1996.
From the 37 exhibitors of the edition at the end of the 90s, we have reached 160 of this edition, without counting the numerous initiatives that, over time, have alternated and have enriched the Milanese market exhibition. We can remember, for example, the Grape garden, that of the Butterflies or the Garden of Fabrics in 2006, up to the Flower Gardens born in 2011.

Peony Orticola Milan

Roberto Gamoletti, author of ‘Orticola Milano’ has been dealing with the hybridization of peonies at an amateur level for 25 years and has been a member of the American Peony Society since 2000 where he has registered, to date, ten hybrids, seven of which are shrubs.
From the passion for peony and gardening, very particular hybridizations and colors were born, including the Peony Orticola Milano, a herbaceous hybrid, early flowering with semi-double flowers, slightly scented.
The plant can reach a height of 76 cm and saw its first flowering in 2014, about seven years after the seeds germinated.
Since 2017, the subsequent multiplications and selections have been followed and operated by the G&G Buffa nursery in Poirino in the province of Turin.

The Nymphaea thermarum in Orticola

Only for this edition Orticola will host a unique rarity all over the world. This is Nymphaea thermarum, an aquatic plant in Rwanda with a very special history. The Nymphaea thermarum lived in a small spring which, due to the exploitation of the waters, has disappeared.
Only thanks to the restoration of some seeds and the great work of Carlos Magdalena, a botanist from Kew Gardens in London, was it possible to save this unique plant from extinction.
Water Nursery, a Latina nursery specializing in aquatic plants and engaged in the research, cultivation and conservation of ‘native’ and endangered plants, will bring Nymphaea thermarum to Orticola.
NT is a difficult plant to cultivate and, given its rare characteristics, it can only be grown indoors with the right conditions.
It is not for sale but will be a gift for the association’s collection, as well as for the Botanical Gardens

The other plants of Orticola

The Marrubium friwaldskyanum, exhibited in the Cascina Bollate stand, is part of the typical flora of Bulgaria.
It is a species considered in danger of extinction and inserted within the protected areas of the European ecological network ‘Natura2000’. Anthurium luxurians is a particularly rare Anthurium, but in May will be present at Orticola!
Plant that Plant, located near Malmö in Sweden, will present an initiative linked to the benefits of indoor plants, in particular to some species that are particularly suitable for growing in the home.
Philodendron, Anthurium and Monstera, are the most used to decorate rooms, as some can adapt to the lack of lighting and humidity in the air. Monstera obliqua, immortalized in the 2022 image by Orticola, is a species of the Araceae family, native to Trinidad and tropical central and southern America. Like other plants of the genus Monstera, this species is an epiphytic climber (that is, it grows on another plant, from which, however, it does not derive nourishment, as well as numerous orchids). Its inflorescences become bright yellow.

Orticola per Milano

For 25 years, Orticola di Lombardia, a non-profit association, has donated the proceeds from the organization of the exhibition market to the city green; in particular, following the agreement with the Municipality of Milan, a part is intended for the Indro Montanelli Public Gardens and, in particular, for the arrangement and care of the Cerbiatti Flowerbed in front of the Civic Museum of Natural History. At the Perego Garden, in via dei Giardini, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance activities continue, as well as the growth, care and maintenance of “L’Altra Pergola.
Homage to Leonardo “, the mulberry pergola, just like the one depicted in the fresco by Leonardo da Vinci, realized in life-size in the Cortile delle Armi of the Castello Sforzesco da Orticola di Lombardia in 2019, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the master’s death. Orticola’s commitment is also aimed at maintaining the Garden of the Royal Palace where, on an old parking lot, an oasis for a pleasant stop in the heart of the city was born. Other initiatives carried out by the Association in favor of the city, are the management of the Entrance Court of the Gallery of Modern Art. In recent years Orticola di Lombardia has also redeveloped the external perimeter, which opens onto the portico, of the courtyard of Palazzo Dugnani, with the creation of a back on which wisteria climb, while the gate has been covered with roses.
The Flower Gardens of CityLife are always active in Viale Eginardo, built over an area of approximately 3000 square meters. Another project is the Ceresio Investments teak benches around the city. For some years Ceresio Investments has been a corporate partner of Orticola di Lombardia and has given away numerous benches to Milan, which are positioned in the Milanese public gardens, to find the benches just turn around the city and look around.

Posidonia oceanica: the lungs of the sea

The sea, like the air, needs its plants and oxygen.
Posidonia oceanica is one of the most important plants ever for the conservation of the sea and coasts. It is an endemic species of the Mediterranean that contributes to the oxygenation of the sea, to the prevention of coastal erosion and to the nourishment of various marine species.

For these reasons, Posidonia oceanica is a protected plant, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
In the Mediterranean it is an indicator of sea purity and occupies an area of 3% of the entire marine space.
Although it is not a highly endangered species, the annual loss is perceptible and the problem of slow reproduction of new grasslands even more important.
For this reason, the preservation of Posidonia Oceanica is of fundamental importance for the health of our seas and people.

Arum italicum (light cigaro): the plant that drives away evil spirits

n botany it is known by the name Arum Italicum, although this plant is commonly called wild calla or gigaro. We are talking about a poisonous herbaceous plant that is not rarely used as an ornament both in the garden and in pots. Let’s see together everything there is to know about this particular plant.

Arum Italicum belongs to the Araceae family and is a rustic plant of European origin; it spreads very much in the wild in uncultivated places, but also on the side of the road or in vegetable gardens. Being a perennial plant, also the Gigaro, just like the calla, has a robust and rhizomatous root that is light brown in color.
This plant has a development in height that on average is around 40 cm and with the passage of time it manifests itself with large and dense bushes.
The leaves arise from a leathery petiole which usually develops with a length of 20 cm; they are shiny and very intense green in color and often show white spots. It is during the autumn season that the leaves are born from the tuber, while in the summer they dry out completely. A small peculiarity concerns the size of the leaves: the innermost ones are always longer than the external ones.
The lamina of the leaves is troubled and has wavy and smooth margins. During the spring season, shapely stems appear among the leaves of this plant; the stems have a green-white spathe inflorescence that ends with a yellow apex. From here small white flowers are born. Arum Italicum blooms during the spring season.
The fertilized flowers united in terminal spikes give rise to the fruits of this plant, which are nothing but small berries with a shiny and spherical shape. Initially the berries are green in color, and then turn into beautiful orange – red berries.
Be careful, because the berries of this plant are poisonous.

Cultivation

From the point of view of exposure, Arum Italicum prefers shady or at most semi-shaded environments.

Gigaro is not a plant that can stand the cold and low temperatures. To cultivate this plant it is good to use a soft, drained soil rich in organic substances.

Watering this plant is not particularly tiring: Arum Italicum, in fact, is a plant that is satisfied with rain and therefore should not be watered frequently.

The only precaution to have from this point of view is during the warm seasons, especially in periods when it rains little. For fertilization, the advice is to administer a fertilizer for flowering plants in liquid form or a slow-release granular fertilizer during the spring season.

Diseases and treatments

Being a rustic and wild plant, Arum Italicum is not afraid of many parasites. On the contrary, it is very subject to water stagnation which, in the long run, can cause the roots to rot. In any case, there are two pests to keep under control: the cottony cochineal and the spider mite. To eliminate these two parasites, the advice is to use a cotton swab with alcohol and water; in the most serious cases, however, it is advisable to purchase a natural pesticide.

Curiosity

The scientific name Arum derives from the Greek Aron which means heat. The choice of the name is not accidental: this plant, in fact, when it is in full bloom it can emit heat. The word Italicum, on the other hand, derives from the locality of its first findings.

Like many plants, Arum Italicum also has a history of symbolism and superstition. In Abruzzo, for example, tradition states that the Gigaro is able to keep evil spirits away, to protect newborn children and to give love to the most unfortunate.

In ancient times, the starch extracted from its roots was used to starch the tissues. The rhizome of this plant was also used in medicine for its beneficial properties, in particular for its purgative and expectorant properties. Remember that it is a poisonous plant: ingesting the berries can be very dangerous, especially in children.

Kalanchoe tetraphylla: the plant of good wishes and a new beginning

Kalankoe Tetraphylla, commonly known by the name Calancola, is an ornamental succulent plant with an incredible ornamental effect. It is an indoor plant that boasts colorful and colorful flowers, which make it very decorative indeed. Let’s see together everything there is to know about this plant.

The Calancola belongs to the Crossulaceae family, is of exotic origin and there are 120 different species. This succulent was introduced into the trade at the beginning of the twentieth century and has been the subject of incredible diffusion ever since. Kalankoe Tetraphylla has African origins and in particular comes from Madagascar.

This plant generally has a height of 40 cm and has large, fleshy leaves with a rounded appearance; the leaves meet in a central rosette with a compact shape. One of the most popular features of this plant is the color of the leaves, which are covered with a layer of bloom and are green with the edges tending to purple.

During the flowering period erect stems emerge from the center of the rosette, from which small flowers have life; the latter, tubular in shape, can have different colors: from pink to white, also passing through yellow, orange or red. Calancola blooms in winter and its flowers are similar to those of Echeveria.

Cultivation

As for exposure, Kalankoe Tetraphylla loves bright environments but not exposed to the sun’s rays. In any case, it is good to leave this plant in a place with a temperature not lower than 15 ° C. Calancola loves drained soils, rich in organic substances and adequately soft.

As mentioned, the Calancola blooms in winter. During the winter months it is advisable not to water it, while from the vegetative restart until the autumn season, watering must be occasional: the advice is to water it when the soil is completely dry.

For fertilization it is important to use a specific fertilizer for succulent plants; the advice is to fertilize once every 4 weeks, mixing the fertilizer with water and following the recommended doses on the package. Alternatively, you can use a slow-release granular fertilizer every 60/90 days to be dispensed at the base of the head.

Diseases and treatments in brief

Like most succulents, the Calancola also fears attack by parasites. The main dangers for this plant are:

  • Botrytis fungus, which manifests itself with the presence of necrotic areas and attacks the leaves by covering them with mold.
  • Phytophthora fungus, which causes leaves and stems to wilt and risks rotting the plant.
  • Puccinia fungus, a parasite that develops in conditions of extreme humidity and that manifests itself on the leaves, which are covered with light and soft spots.
  • Mealy cochineal, a parasite that generally proliferates in the lower part of the leaves.

In short, Kalankoe Tetraphylla suffers greatly from humidity, excesses and stagnation of water. To combat the parasites described so far, there are many natural pesticides on the market, completely harmless for the plant and very effective against diseases.

As for plant care, as mentioned, it is very important not to overdo it with water. It is also advisable to dust the leaves periodically using a damp cloth and favoring transpiration. Also remember to always remove dried leaves and flowers.

Curiosity

Not many know this, but Kalankoe Tetraphylla has an interesting symbolic meaning. In fact, many are often used to give a gift to a loved one when they go to live in a new home; this plant is in fact considered a good omen for a new beginning. Being a succulent plant it does not need special care and attention and for this very reason it is very often chosen as a gift to give to people who do not have much time to devote to the green thumb. With its bright and special colors it will be able to give a touch of class to your home!

Color the terrace or garden with pale tradescantia

If you have just purchased a plant that can withstand whatever adversity it is subjected to, then it is probably a plant belonging to the Tradescantia genus, which includes as many as seventy-five types of plants.

The Tradescantia owes its name to John Tradescant the Younger, a Dutch Huguenot naturalist who had the role of gardener in the royal court of Charles I of England. After going to the English colony in America called Virginia, he was able to export numerous plants and crops to Europe, including the Tradescantia, which was very successful not only for its beauty, but also for its high resistance to bad weather, so much so that it took the name of “herb of misery”, precisely because of the few care it needed, even if an eye towards her was never bad. One of the many varieties of this plant is the pallida, coming from Mexico and, to date, it is possible to find it in Southern Italy, although the entire family of plants is native to North America, Central America and the northernmost part of South America. .

The pale Tradescantia has a very particular appearance and varies according to the types, such as the “Purple Heart”, with leaves of a very dark shade of purple and bright pink flowers or the “Variegated Purple Heart”, with streaked purple leaves and lilac flowers, in addition to “Ocampo White”, with white flowers and leaves of the same color as those of grapes.

Cultivation methods

First of all, it is good to create a soil suitable for Tradescantia, that is, one in which the water is able to drain well during watering. A mix of peat, coarse sand and normal garden soil is excellent; the whole is preferable to be placed in terracotta pots, given the fact that they are particularly known for their porosity.

After creating the growing base, it is good to know how to water the pale Tradescantia: The ideal would be to give it more water in the warmer seasons, while its use in autumn and winter should be strictly limited, simply by ensuring that the soil remains a little wet.

As for the seasons, it is good that the plant always remains well lit, but must remain away from direct sunlight, which is not tolerated, as well as cold air, which could damage it in winter. Better to grow Tradescantia pallida in areas where the temperature does not drop below 10 ° Celsius.

Once the plant has been cultivated properly, then you can be ready to make it reproduce by using cuttings, ie fragments of the plant itself adequately cut in the summer months and deprived of leaves in the lower part; only at this point can they be planted in groups of three in a pot with moist soil. Once you have obtained your colorful bushes, it is also good to think about reinforcing them and making them even more luxuriant with adequate summer fertilization. In particular, it is necessary to use a very rich fertilizer, in which magnesium, copper, iron, boron and zinc are present.

Diseases and treatments

The resistance of this plant also concerns diseases, since it is rarely scratched by parasites such as cochineal, but its roots can be affected by fungal growths that can damage it if they are watered excessively, so it is good not to overdo it.

If you notice leaves becoming small, deformed and discolored, then it is very likely that your Tradescantia needs more light exposure, while if there are whitish animals it is likely that you are in the presence of lice; with these or with cochineal it is always good to use specific pesticides.

That said, it is definitely a great plant for both indoors and outdoors even if you don’t have too much time to take care of it.
